Pain Caused By Endometriosis

Women with endometriosis feel pain during or related to their periods.

Period Pain: Endometrial tissue builds up inside the uterus, breaks down into blood and tissue, and sheds as her menstrual flow (period). This cycle of growth and shedding happens every month or so.

Endometriosis Pain: Endometrial tissue builds up outside the uterus, go through similar cycle; grow, break down into blood and tissue, shed once a month. But because this tissue isn't where it is supposed to be, it can't leave the body the way period normally does. As part of process, endometriosis areas make chemicals that may irritate the nearby tissue, as well as some other chemicals that are known to cause pain. Going through the process of this monthly cycle, endometriosis area can grow and become nodules or bumps on the surface of pelvic organs, becoming cysts (fluid-filled sacs) in the ovaries. Sometimes the chemicals produced by the endometriosis can cause the organs in the pelvic area to scar, and even scar together so they appear as one large organ.

To Control Bone Mineral Density Loss: Control factors that are known to affect bone density such as body mass index (BMI), exercise or calcium intake.

Medication For Endometriosis Does Not Help To Avoid Bone Mineral Density Loss: Medications known to affect bone mineral density; thyroid hormone, suppression, supraphysiologic glucocorticoids, GnRH, dilantin, as well as the fertility drugs.
